The easternmost Galápagos island, where sea lions own the waterfront and trails lead to frigatebird cliffs and a freshwater crater lake. San Cristóbal is a quietly brilliant hiking island.

Why hike San Cristóbal?

San Cristóbal feels different from the rest of the Galápagos — laid-back, sea-lion-filled and easy to explore on foot straight from town. From Puerto Baquerizo Moreno you can walk to Cerro Tijeretas (Frigatebird Hill), with its interpretation-centre loop and snorkelling cove, and along the coast to the sea-lion beach of La Lobería.

Up in the green highlands, the trail to El Junco circles one of the only freshwater crater lakes in the Galápagos, alive with frigatebirds bathing on the wing. Add the white sand of Cerro Brujo and the red-footed boobies of Punta Pitt, and San Cristóbal makes a relaxed, wildlife-rich multi-day hiking island.

The easy-going island

San Cristóbal is the most walkable Galápagos island — many of its best spots are reachable on foot or a short ride from town, and sea lions are simply everywhere. It's a gentler hiking experience than Isabela's volcano, and a lovely place to slow down. We run it land-based with a naturalist guide for the park sites that require one.

San Cristóbal hiking FAQ

What are the best hikes on San Cristóbal?

Cerro Tijeretas (Frigatebird Hill) and the coastal walk to La Lobería are the easy classics; the El Junco crater-lake loop in the highlands is the standout. Cerro Brujo and Punta Pitt add wilder, boat-accessed walks.

Can you walk to the trails from town?

Many of them, yes — San Cristóbal is the most walkable Galápagos island. Cerro Tijeretas and La Lobería are reachable on foot from Puerto Baquerizo Moreno; the highlands (El Junco) are a short ride away.

How many days do you need on San Cristóbal?

Two days covers the town trails and the highlands; three lets you add a boat-and-walk day to Punta Pitt or Cerro Brujo. It combines well with Santa Cruz and Isabela.

Do you need a guide to hike San Cristóbal?

Some town-edge trails you can do independently; the national-park sites and boat-accessed walks require a licensed naturalist guide. We arrange guides where needed and handle logistics.
